Aramco, Maaden plan transition minerals JV, commercial production likely in 2027

Saudi Arabian Oil Co. (Aramco) and Saudi Arabian Mining Co. (Maaden) announced today, Jan. 15, the signing of non-binding heads of terms for the formation of a minerals exploration and mining joint venture (JV) in the Kingdom.

The proposed JV will focus on energy transition minerals, including extracting lithium from high-concentration deposits and advancing cost-effective direct lithium extraction (DLE) technologies, the companies said in a joint press statement received by Argaam.

The two companies expect commercial production of lithium to commence by 2027.

Lihytech will lead the extraction project with cooperation from Saudi mining company Ma’aden and Aramco

Saudi Arabia, whose economy is based around its vast reserves of oil and natural gas, has found another source to diversify its oil-rich economy as the kingdom recently found lithium reserves in its oil fields near the sea. According to reports, Saudi Aramco aka Aramco, Saudi Arabia’s state-owned petroleum and natural gas company, extracted lithium under a pilot project from one of its oil fields.

Khalid bin Saleh Al-Mudaifer, Saudi Arabi’s Deputy Minister of Mining Affairs, announced that the kingdom will soon launch a commercial pilot program to promote the direct mining of lithium.

Aramco and Lihytech Collaborate on Lithium Recovery

Aramco, one of the world’s leading integrated energy and chemicals companies, and Saudi Lithium Infinity (Lihytech), an innovative startup incubated by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), are working together to accelerate the development of Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology in Saudi Arabia.

This collaboration aims to support the Kingdom’s growing demand for lithium, essential for advancing the country’s electric vehicle (EV) initiatives as outlined in Vision 2030.

RIYADH, Dec 18 (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia has successfully extracted lithium from brine samples from national giant Aramco’s oilfields and plans to launch a commercial pilot programme for direct extraction soon, the Saudi vice minister of mining affairs said on Tuesday.

Lithium Infinity, also known as Lihytech, a start-up launched out of King Abdullah University for Science and Technology, will lead the extraction project with cooperation from Saudi mining company Ma’aden and Aramco, Khalid al-Mudaifer told Reuters.
